Air Force to Close Down Space Surveillance System

I saw this headline on my Yahoo page:

Very interesting...

  1. Well, as the Reuters article notes, the old, original "space fence" was using outmoded, decades-old technology, and a new one is being planned and developed by Lockheed currently and Phase 1 will be implemented by 2018, which will be able to track smaller objects (softball size vs. the old system, basketball size) more actively and with greater precision.

There are also other radars and optical AFSS systems that have been and will be used in the interim.
